Hedge and Shrub Trimming
Shaped by hand, timed to the plant, cleaned up before we pull out of the drive.
Shrubs are the frame around a house. When they are overgrown they swallow windows, block light, and make an otherwise nice property feel neglected. When they are shaped right, the whole front of the house reads sharper — usually more than a mulch job or a new door does.
Timing matters more than technique
Spring bloomers like lilac, forsythia, and viburnum set their flower buds the previous year, so pruning them in early spring cuts off the show. Those get trimmed right after they finish blooming. Evergreens get shaped after the spring flush hardens off. Nothing gets cut hard after early September, because new growth pushed that late will not harden before frost.
Shape with a wider base
A hedge trimmed narrower at the bottom than the top shades its own base and goes bare down low within a few seasons. We keep the base slightly wider so light reaches the lower branches and the hedge stays full top to bottom.
Overgrown properties and rentals
We take on the ones that have gotten away — shrubs over the gutter line, hedges grown into the fence, junk brush along the garage. It is a bigger first visit, then it drops to a normal maintenance trim after that.

Common Questions
- How often should hedges be trimmed?
- Twice a year covers most properties: a main shaping in late June and a light cleanup in late August. Fast growers like privet and burning bush sometimes want a third pass.
- Can you cut back an overgrown shrub hard?
- Depends on the plant. Boxwood, privet, and yew tolerate hard renewal pruning. Most junipers and arborvitae do not — cut into old bare wood and it never fills back in. We will tell you which one you have before we cut.
- Do you clean up the clippings?
- Always. Clippings are tarped, beds are raked, and hard surfaces are blown off before we leave.
