Paver Patios & Walkways

Outdoor space that stays level, drains right, and still looks new in ten years.

A patio is only as good as what's under it. The stone you pick is a weekend decision; the base is what decides whether the surface is still flat after five Michigan winters. We build the base first and treat the pavers as the finish.

How the job runs

  • Layout marked on the ground so you can walk the size before we dig
  • Excavation to depth, with spoil hauled off
  • Aggregate base placed and compacted in lifts
  • Screeded bedding sand, pavers laid, pattern held to line
  • Soldier course border, edge restraint, saw cuts
  • Polymeric sand swept and set, site blown clean

Pitch and water

Every surface gets pitched away from the house — roughly an eighth of an inch per foot. That's enough to move water without you feeling the slope in a chair. If the yard beyond the patio holds water, we handle it as part of the job rather than dumping runoff into a low spot.

Walkways and steps

Front walks get the same base treatment, sized wide enough for two people to walk side by side. Where a walk meets a stoop we set steps with consistent riser heights, because uneven risers are how people trip in the dark.

Common Questions

What does a paver patio cost?
Most residential patios land in a per-square-foot range that moves with paver choice, access, and how much excavation is involved. We measure on site and give one written number that includes base, material, cuts, and cleanup.
How deep is the base?
Typically six to eight inches of compacted aggregate for a patio and more under anything that carries vehicle weight. It gets compacted in lifts, not dumped and rolled once, because that is what keeps it flat through freeze-thaw.
Do you seal the pavers?
Only if you want it. Sealing deepens the color and makes cleanup easier, but it needs redoing every few years. Polymeric sand in the joints matters more for keeping weeds and ants out.
